PLC Perth is proud to be the only girls’ school in Western Australia to offer Flight School, an extraordinary programme that allows students to learn to fly a glider under the guidance of industry-qualified instructors. It’s a rare opportunity found at very few schools nationwide, and one that reflects PLC’s belief in giving girls authentic, future-focussed experiences that build bravery, capability, and confidence. Flight School begins on the ground, where students work alongside experienced gliding coaches to understand aircraft safety, complete pre-flight checks, and prepare the gliders for take-off. From the moment they arrive, students are immersed in teamwork, problem-solving, and technical learning all in a supportive environment that encourages them to step outside their comfort zones.
For Charlotte (Year 10), Flight School was a turning point.
“Flight school was one of the most amazing experiences I will never forget. When I first arrived, excitement mixed with nerves as I knew this experience would take me outside of my comfort zone. Meeting my instructor quickly eased my worries; his stories about gliding and his passion for aviation truly inspired me.”
Once in the cockpit, Charlotte discovered the thrill and challenge of taking control in mid-air.
“After take-off, my instructor let me take control. I was scared, but knowing he could step in at any time and understanding more about how gliding worked helped calm me down. By my final flight, I was able to take control for the entire time, something I never would have imagined at the start of the week.”
Over the course of the programme, Charlotte completed ten flights, each one building her skills, judgment, and self-belief. Beyond the technical aspects, she says the greatest lessons were about perseverance, trust, and backing herself.
“Looking back, flight school taught me so much more than just how to fly. It showed me the importance of teamwork, trust, and believing in myself. It pushed me beyond my comfort zone and left our entire group with memories that we will all carry with us forever.”
At PLC, leadership begins with bravery. Flight School gives students a safe and structured way to practise this. PLC girls take thoughtful risks, navigate uncertainty, and discover what they are capable of when they trust their own abilities.
