Outdoor Education

A Principle-Driven Approach

PLC’s Outdoor Education is a cornerstone of the College’s curriculum, intentionally designed and led by an in-house team who work with our students every year as they progress through the programmes. Your daughter is known, understood and challenged to learn more about herself.

The Outdoor Education curriculum is built upon five core principles that shape every experience, ensuring a holistic and transformative journey for all.

The Five Guiding Principles

1. Leadership

Developing from our programmes in the early years of school (our WildSpace programme for Pre-Kindergarten), Outdoor Education begins with personal leadership, where students first learn to look after themselves in an outdoor setting. As they progress, they develop skills to be effective team members before ultimately taking on the responsibility of leading others. This tiered approach grows a strong foundation in self managements skills before progressing to leading others.

2. Eco-Literacy

Students’ relationship with the environment evolves through programmes in all years. It starts with becoming comfortable in outdoor environments. In Years 1 and 2, PLC students join with students from Scotch College for Beach and River School, where the students learn about our local environments. This progresses to learning more about the natural world as students interact with it as part of their experiences. This, in turn, fosters a deeper love for the environment, and progresses as students develop a sense of environmental stewardship and undertake steps towards responsibly protecting it.

3. Exploration and Play

This highlights the value of unstructured learning (for children and adults alike). Programmes in all years actively provide opportunities for genuine exploration and play, which are crucial for developing strong mental health and resilience. These immersive, spontaneous moments are where some of the most profound learning and growth occur.

4. Community

Outdoor Education is a powerful tool for building a strong sense of community and wellbeing. Students learn to work together, support one another, and access support when required. These are transferrable life skills, useful for building supportive networks  both during and after their time at PLC.

5. Challenge

Challenge is a highly personalised element of the programme. It focusses on meeting each student where they are and then providing them with strategies to push beyond their perceived limits. This process develops grit and resilience, providing invaluable life skills that extend far beyond the outdoor classroom.

The Quest Programme: A Culmination

The culmination of these progressions are realised in the Year 10 Quest Outdoor Education Expeditions, a peak, life-changing experience designed to bring all five principles together. Quest is the capstone event that offers students a chance to apply everything they’ve learned and create powerful, lasting memories that shape their future.

Students can choose from:

  • Ningaloo: A sea kayaking expedition, navigating the crystal-clear waters of the Ningaloo Reef while developing teamwork and outdoor survival skills.
  • Karijini: A rugged canyoning and bushwalking expedition experience, where students traverse the majestic gorges of Karijini National Park, building confidence and adaptability.
  • Tasmania: A challenging bushwalking journey, through the spectacular alpine landscapes of Tasmania’s renowned Overland Track, fostering endurance and self-reliance.

The Wild Space

Our Outdoor Education Programme starts early!

Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and Pre-Primary students regularly visit The Wild Space – a natural, riverside classroom just a short walk from campus. Here, surrounded by the beauty of the Swan River, they climb, explore, create, and connect with the world around them. It’s outdoor education at its most meaningful — sparking curiosity, building confidence, and nurturing a deep respect for nature from the very beginning.

River & Beach School

Our River and Beach School offers Years 1 and 2 students a unique opportunity to learn in the great outdoors alongside their peers from Scotch College. These outdoor classroom experiences encourage hands-on learning, imaginative play, and exploration in natural settings.

The programme fosters a deep connection to self, nature, and community. Your daughter will build confidence, independence, and resilience while developing essential problem-solving skills. Through play and discovery, she will learn to take calculated risks, nurture her curiosity, and embrace the joy of learning beyond traditional classroom walls.

Years 3 & 4

In Year 3, your daughter will enjoy an exciting overnight stay on campus, where she will participate in team games and experience the fun of staying away from home in a familiar and supportive environment. The following morning, she will return home with new friendships, stronger confidence, and a sense of achievement.

Building on their Year 3 experience, students in Year 4 embark on a two-day programme. Sleeping in tents, they take part in a variety of water and land-based activities, developing teamwork, problem-solving skills, and an appreciation for the natural environment.

Year 5

The Year 5 Outdoor Education Programme at PLC takes your daughter on an unforgettable three-day adventure near Dwellingup. Surrounded by towering Jarrah and Marri trees, students immerse themselves in nature while developing essential life skills.

Through a range of team-based activities, she will develop her co-operation, self-responsibility, and problem-solving skills, learning the value of collaboration and perseverance.

Year 6

Set against the stunning backdrop of Geographe Bay near Busselton, this camp will challenge your daughter to step up as a leader while enjoying the natural beauty of Western Australia’s coastline.

She will develop confidence, independence, and a deeper understanding of her role as a leader.

Year 7

The Year 7 Outdoor Education Programme at PLC is an exciting five-day adventure, designed to challenge your daughter both physically and mentally while fostering resilience, teamwork, and self-discovery.

Year 8

In Year 8, the Outdoor Education Programme at PLC marks an exciting transition as students experience a taste of expeditioning. Set in the stunning Margaret River region, this immersive experience challenges students to develop self-reliance, leadership, and teamwork in a dynamic outdoor setting.

Year 9

The Year 9 Outdoor Education Programme at PLC is a six-day expedition designed to further develop your daughter’s competence, confidence, and leadership skills in the natural environment. Set in the Walpole-Nornalup National Park, students choose from a variety of challenging expeditions, including sea kayaking, hiking along the Bibbulmun Track, and surfing local breaks.
